Pre-employment and sector-based work academies

Using a sector based work academy to support recruitment into the social care sector in Surrey.

Social care employers in Surrey reported difficulties in their recruitment of social care workers. To help, Surrey Skills Academy set up a sector based work academy to match social care employers with potential recruits. The project involved different stakeholders including Woking Jobcentre Plus, Professional Training Solutions Ltd, local adult social care employers and children’s centres.

The sector based work academy model includes pre-employment training for recruits that meet the needs of the employer and the sector, a work experience placement in a social care setting, a guaranteed interview at the end of the programme.

Of the 21 people who attended, 18 were recruited onto the programme.

Surrey Skills Academy worked with a local training provider, Professional Training Solutions, to deliver a four week course for recruits. This included the Level 1 Award in Introduction to Health and Social Care in Children’s and Young People’s Settings. It also included sector specific training.

Surrey Skills Academy recruited 18 people onto the programme, of which 15 completed the programme including work experience. Of these, 11 were successful in getting a job.
